HISTORY & HERITAGE
The AFRICAN HEADWRAP
(also known as Dhuku, or Gele) is deeply rooted in tradition and history. Each African nation has a unique story to tell. Women in Ghana, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and other West and South African countries consider them to be cultural expressions that symbolizes many things including: prosperity, spirituality, modesty, wealth, or social and marital status.
I believe that head wraps worn by African American women today symbolize a connection between the past the present. It is a cultural and historical fashion accessory that spans from pre-slavery Africa to wardrobes of black women all over the world. Personally, I feel like a “QUEEN” when I wear one. It requires boldness, emulates mystic, and provokes interesting responses.
